James "joe" Kennaway

In memory of James "Joe" Kennaway

Born: Point St. Charles, Montreal, Quebec, January 25, 1905. Died Johnston, Rhode Island, March 7, 1969.

Kennaway's career stretched from a humble beginning as the son of Scottish immigrants living in Montreal to the point where he not only represented Canada in international football but also Scotland thereby earning the rare distinction of having being capped internationally for two countries.

While playing with Fall River FC in the American Soccer league, Kennawy was the difference in a 1-0 victory over touring Celtic in North Tiverton, RI. Just over three months later after goalkeeper John Thomson was fatally injured in a match, Celtic called for the Canadian to serve as a replacement.

During the nine years that Joe played for Celtic he made 295 appearances and won the League Championship in 1935-36 and 37-38. The Cup in 1931, 1933 and 1937 and he also won an Empire Exhibition Cup medal in 1938. In 1936 he was one of only two Celtic players featured in the "popular footballers" picture card set in the UK.

After passing away in 1969, he was posthumously hououred by both the New England and the Soccer Hall of Fame in Canada. The Canadian Soccer Association named Joe in their Best XI in 50 years 1912 to 1962 as part of their 100th. anniversary celebrations.
